Math:
In Grade 1 mathematics is broken down into three categories: Number, Patterns, and Shape and Space. Some areas of focus will be:
English Language Arts:
This year we will be looking at different types of stories, poems and media. We will be focusing on:
Students will take home a sight word list (popcorn words) which should be reviewed daily with their parents. Additional words will be added as the student becomes more familiar with the words on the list.
Spellings tests will begin in October and will consist of 5-8 words. Students will receive the list on Friday and write the spelling test on Thursday.
Social Studies:
The Social Studies theme in Grade 1 is Connecting and Belonging. Students will investigate their roles in their communities. The topics are:
In Science we will learn how to investigate and explore the world around us. Our topics for Grade 1 Science are:
In Grade 1 we will be using the ‘We Believe’ Catholic program. Topics in Grade 1 are:
Health:
Health topics will include: Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating, using appropriate language, dental care, our emotions, safety, healthy lifestyle practices, and how physical movement and fitness is important in our daily lives.
French:
We will focus on building our French vocabulary by looking at:
Timetable:
We have gym class on days 1, 3, and 5. Please make sure that your child has appropriate footwear for running. We have music on days 2, 4, and 6.

- Counting by 2’s to 30.
- Counting by 5’s and 10’s to 100.
- Addition and subtraction
- Measurement
- Creating patterns
- Comparing 2D and 3D shapes.

- Listening, speaking, reading, writing and representing to explore their thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences.
- Planning and organizing their own stories or poems.
- Presenting and share ideas and experiences through show and tell.
