Welcome to Grade 2!
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to Grade 2 at St. Joseph the Worker School! My name is Miss Pirch. I‘m looking forward to getting to know all of you throughout the school year!
I have included with this letter, an overview of what we will be learning this year and some classroom expectations.
Mathematics:
Students will be building on the skills they have developed in Grade 1. There are four main categories in Mathematics: Numbers; Shape and Space; Statistics and Probability; Patterns and Relations. Each week we will be learning a little about a topic. Students will be given opportunities to practice their newly learnt skill throughout the week. On occasion they will be sent home a task to practice. This will be due the next school day.
English Language Arts:
English Language Arts is the foundation of all subjects in Grade 2.
We will be working on our listening, viewing, speaking, reading, writing and representing skills throughout the year. We will practice these skills to:
Students will be given their new Spelling words on Mondays. We will practice and work with the words throughout the week. Spelling Tests will be given on Fridays.
Home Reading will be done through the Read Every Day Folder (R.E.D. Folder). The R.E.D. Folder will contain your child’s book for Home Reading. When your child is able to read the book fluently and correctly, write the title of the book, the date and your signature on the Reading Log. When your child returns the folder to me, I will listen to them read the book to me. If they are able to read the book fluently and correctly, I will put a sticker on their Reading Log, take the book out and replace it with a higher level book.
We are working on developing our reading skills. Some of those skills will include, reading for meaning, making connections and sequencing within texts.
We have Buddy Reading with older students once per cycle. This will assist your child in developing their reading skills.
We will work on vocabulary and grammar throughout the year. We will work on words from other subjects to enhance their understanding of the vocabulary.
We will work on handwriting skills throughout the year.
We will have Show and Tell once a week. I will create a schedule and send it home with your child.
Social Studies:
Grade 2 Social Studies is all about Communities in Canada.
Science:
Science is broken into 4 main categories:
French:
The focus in Grade 2 French is on oral communication skills. We will learn various vocabulary and expressions by listening to and participating in actions, games, songs and presentations. The topics in French include:
Religion:
In addition to our daily prayer and Catholic practices we will be using the Sadlier “We Believe” program. Topics in Grade 2 include: Jesus Christ is With Us Always, Jesus Calls Us to Penance and Reconciliation, Jesus Gives Himself to the Eucharist, and We Live Our Catholic Faith. We will also be exploring special times and seasons in the Catholic church. Such as: Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter.
Health:
Health Topics Include: Daily Healthy Habits; Communicable Diseases, Illnesses, Conditions; Dental Care; Daily Participation in Regular Physical Activity; Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating; Any Differences and Similarities; Using Appropriate Language.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned if not completed in class or if I feel extra work is needed in an area. There will occasionally be small projects. There will be weekly Spelling work. There will be daily Home Reading. There will be occasional math practice tasks. Please have homework assignments completed by the due date provided or by the next school day.
Please check your child’s agenda for any homework or important notes. Please initial the Agenda every day.
Schedule:
We have Gym class every Day 1,3, and 5 and Music class every Day 2,4, and 6. Please make sure your child has appropriate footwear for running. We have Mass once per month (all are welcome).
