Pre-Kindergarten Program
Facilitator: Mrs. I. Wasylenko
St. Joseph the Worker School offers a half time Pre-Kindergarten Program. Students who will be four years old by December 31st may apply. Children must be toilet trained. This program is taught by qualified staff and has a maximum of 1:10 teacher/student ratio.
We offer a play based program that fosters the social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and religious development of children. It is a mixture of both the themes as well as the emergent curricula that includes a combination of child-initiated spontaneous play and planned activities designed around children’s interests and needs, all within a safe and supportive environment that stimulates and sustains children’s play. We encourage the development of the whole child with activities and experiences aimed at providing a strong foundation for the early developmental years.
Parents and families are an essential part of our community and we welcome their input, volunteering, and other support. We promote daily, open communication.
Daily Schedule
Students work on activities and centres throughout the morning, where they are learning new concepts and then applying these new concepts in various formats. The centres offer a balance of large muscle and fine motor skill development and are comprised of various skill-building activities that reinforce the concepts learned in class. The centres also allow students to work with other members of their class in order to further develop social skills, and also to learn how to work independently. The centres allow for exploration and learning through play.
The activities will cover a variety of subject areas, including: Math, Science, English Language Arts, Religion, Music, Art, Social Studies. Often, these activities are a combination of the subject areas. We also learn about important events, holidays and important celebrations during the Church year, such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and celebrating Mass.
Students will also have Show and Tell and Buddy Reading once a week. To further enhance their learning experiences, field trips and in school presentations will also take place.
HOURS OF OPERATION
The program runs full days. Parents have the choice of having students attend 3 days or 5 days a week.
The school will be closed on In-Service days, statutory holidays (including Easter Monday), as well as the Christmas and Spring Breaks.
